Labeling our classroom :)

A lot of the children have started taking interest in writing for a purpose. They want to know how to spell common words in their environment or write stories and letters to their friends. With the help of friends and teachers we have started labeling our environment, allowing the children to take ownership of the room.

Making Butter!

Fill up a baby food jar about 2/3 of the way with some heavy whipping cream

Then you need to shake, shake, shake, shake, SHAAAKKKEEE!!!!

After a few minutes of some serious shaking your cream will start to get fluffy and form peaks. This is WHIPPED CREAM! We stopped and tasted it at this point although it didn't taste like the whipped cream we are used to because it didn't have any sugar in it.

After a few more minutes of shaking the butter solids will seperate from the buttermilk and you will have BUTTER!

We added a little salt to our butter to make it even more delicious and then we spread it on some irish soda bread. Everyone loved it!

Dr Seuss Author Study

In honor of Dr Seuss's birthday on March 2nd we are doing an author study this week. Today we read "The Foot Book" and did some measuring of our feet. After we measured everyone's foot, we graphed the measurements and talked about who has the biggest and smallest feet.

Rhyme Time!

Working with our hands..

This is a good activity to strengthen little hands to get ready for cutting. Some children come to PreK having never been exposed to cutting and their fine motor skills just aren't ready for it.
-take some play dough or silly putty and form it into a donut. Then, have the child put their hand in the middle (preferably the thumb and pointer finger) and then slowly spread their fingers apart to "break" the donut.

Happy cutting!

Valentine's Day

Today we traced and cut out some hearts to make a collage.

We also made some "mailboxes" so that when our friends bring in cards they can match the name on the cards to the names on the bags to practice reading/recognizing their friends' names.

Grocery Store

Dramatic Play: Grocery Store

Lately we have been working on turning our Dramatic Play area into a grocery store. The children brainstormed all the things we would need, discussed the steps to shopping at a grocery store and even voted on what to name the store.

We made signs to show when the store is open and when it is closed.

We write shopping lists to help us remember what to buy.

Here is Jeiana buying some eggs. She is showing the side of the carton that has the barcode- we learned that is where the cashier scans the items.

At the end of our center time we "close" the store for the day.

Knock Knock..

Lately, as we learn more about rhyming and playing with language the students have shown a real interest in telling "knock knock" jokes. In order to support and encourage their exploration I have started typing their jokes as they tell them. I encourage them to add illustrations and we will create a class book of knock knock jokes.

Learning Letters Using Our Bodies

For each letter we learn we try and make the shape with our bodies. This is an uppercase A!

February is Dental Health Month!
